Welcome To Clones

Clones (pronounced Clo-nez) in County Monaghan is the hometown of the “Clones Cyclone”, former world champion boxer Barry McGuigan. It is also noteworthy in sporting terms because it is home to the largest Gaelic sports stadium in Ireland after Dublin’s Croke Park. Information Clones Ireland

There are a number of relics and pieces of interest to historians of early and medieval Christianity. For example, a well crafted high cross stands near the Church of Ireland’s St Tiernach’s Church. The cross contains engravings of Biblical scenes. Ball Alley Lane contains a small cemetery where the body of St Tiernach himself, the founder of a sixth century monastery in the area, is at rest in a stone coffin. A ninth century round tower – at an earlier point in its history five storeys tall – can also be found nearby. An Augustinian abbey was founded on and near the same site, some of its remains can be seen on MacCurtain Street. Going further back in time, west of the town centre will lead you to a hill top forth dating from the Neolithic period. This in turn was used as a foundation for a twelfth century Norman castle, which unimpressed locals razed to the ground. It wasn’t until 1601 that the English gained control of the town, imposing its mark in the town plan and architecture that followed. History can be further appreciated at the Ulster Canal Stores, which was once a depot for water-transported materials and goods. Today, it is a museum in the summer months, featuring small exhibits on transport and history – political and economic – that had an impact on the town and area. Tourist information can also be got here. Clones caters for diners and guests with a bed and breakfast, a number of hotels and restaurants. However, it also has a number of vibrant pubs, with a festival held every August where you can watch street performers and pub gigs.
